Summer Infant Inc. Recalls 2 Million Baby Bathers

After receiving reports of skull fractures, Summer Infant Inc. has issued a recall of over 2 million baby bathers in the United States and an additional 65,000 units in Canada. The CPSC has received a total of seven injury reports, five of which involved head injuries from falling out of the bathers. Summer Infant Inc. is offering free repair kits which includes a locking strap and installation instructions. Parents of children who have sustained injuries are advised to seek legal counsel in order to determine their rights to seek financial compensation.

Defective Summer Baby Bathers

Sold under two different names, “Mother’s Touch” and “Deluxe Baby Bathers,” the Summer baby bathers feature a pink or blue base to which a metal and fabric seat is attached. According to reports, the metal frame can disengage from the side hinge, posing a serious fall hazard for infants who may be occupying the seat. Although in 2007 Summer Infant Inc. updated the warning label to caution parents to “Never lift or carry the bather with infant in it,” products manufactured earlier disclosed no such warning, and the firm failed to issue a warning label change alerting parents of the potential fall hazard.

Fall Accidents and Infants

Falls are is the leading cause of accidents involving newborns, and because infants are significantly more vulnerable to injuries, even a short fall can have catastrophic results. Four infants between two weeks and two months old have suffered skull fractures from falling out of the defectively designed Summer baby bathers. Other types of injuries that are commonly linked to infant fall accidents include:

  • Bone fractures
  • Contusions
  • Cuts and scratches
  • Concussion
  • Bruises
