Protecting your rights

If you've been involved in an auto accident, truck accident, or motorcycle accident, here are some tips to ensure your rights are protected:

  • Remain at the accident scene long enough to give your name and address to the other driver and police officer. You could be subject to criminal penalties if you leave early from the scene.
  • Relate all relevant facts about the accident to the police, without making definitive statements. Do not assess the blame for the accident—many factors play into collisions, and making hasty judgments may affect your chance for obtaining your full claim.
  • Try not to make firm statements regarding any injuries you may have endured in the accidents. It is perfectly to say that you are unsure. Let a medical professional make a complete assessment of your injuries before talking to the officials.
  • Speak to witnesses and gather information. Be sure to get their name and contact number should a lawyer need further information.
  • Take photographs of the scene, your motorcycle, the other vehicles involved, your injuries, and any other pertinent objects. Evidence could soon disappear, especially on a busy highway, so it is important to snag pictures before it is too late.
  • Seek medical attention from your doctor. Go to a few check ups in case injuries arise later on related to the accident. Keep detailed records and make copies. You may feel pain that you did not immediately feel after the accident, and this could lead to other, more serious problems. Save copies of all medical expenses and bills for your claim.
  • Keep track of all expenses related to the accident; include vehicle rental fees, monies lost due to missed work, mileage, and motorcycle repair expenses.
