Motorcycle Safety Tips

Critical and fatal accidents occur much more often with motorcycles than with automobiles. Two-thirds of total fatal crashes last year involved motorcycles, according to the US Highway Safety Authority. Begin practicing safe riding now to save yourself great pain and even death later on.

Personal Protective Equipment:

Protective apparel designed exclusively for motorcycle riders is an important step in approaching motorcycle safety. Terrible injuries in motorcycles can be prevented with the adoption of personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as “motorcycle gear”. These pieces of equipment serve a range of functions, and involve the protection of all parts of the body.

Use of Protective Motorcycle Gear:

  • Gear is designed to increase visibility on the road. When motorists’ comments are, “But I never saw them!” after an accident, it is clear that increasing visibility is at the forefront of motorcycle safety. Reflective strips and brighter colors aid in making motorcycle riders more noticeable at night and in harsh weather conditions.
  • Motorcyclists require materials that are resistant to serious abrasion in a crash. The traditional choice is leather, but other materials like Kevlar, cordura, and ballistic nylon are hitting the limelight of late. Compared to leather, these fabrics are more forgiving in hot weather, easier to maintain, and generally cheaper. Some fabrics allow for the attachment of padding, which also aids in cushioning falls.
  • To protect seriously vulnerable areas of the body like joints, padding is attached to motorcycle gear. It is especially essential for jackets.
  • Element protection is an essential quality of motorcycle gear. Whether you are riding along the flat highways of the desert, or the winding paths of the Sierra Nevadas, protection from harsh weather is necessary as motorcyclists are in such immediate, close contact with it.

Types of Protective Motorcycle Gear:

  • Beginning at the top, the helmet is the most important article of protective gear. You can get the greatest protection with a full-face helmet, but ¾ and ½ face helmets are also available. For your skull, the more protection, the better.
  • Gloves may be made of leather, Kevlar, cordura, or other durable material or combination of materials. Rigid padding us often placed at the knuckles for added protection. Be sure to purchase gloves designed specifically for motorcycle riders. These will have slightly curved fingers to help the rider maintain his or her grip.
  • Jackets are fairly large, and contain extra padding. Further reinforcement is placed near the spine and shoulders, and the jackets are typically made from Kevlar, leather, or cordura, or ballistic nylon.
  • Pants are an important part of the gear, made from reinforced fabrics with extra padding at the knees.
  • It is encouraged to always wear boots or reinforced shoes. Steel-toed boots are a great way to go if you can’t splurge on fancy motorcycle-riding gear. Sport-riding boots have reinforcements made of tough plastic at the ankles and toes. Those who opt for the cruiser style prefer leather-soled steel-toed boots, available at most boot stores. Some motorcycle companies make their own lines, like Harley Davidson.
  • Although unpopular among cruiser-style motorcyclists, goggles and helmet visors provide much-needed protection to the eyes. From pebbles to a swarm of insects, getting objects thrown into the eyes at 65 mph+ could in itself cause a fatal crash.
  • Another less-popular protective device is hearing protection. Ear plugs could save you perilous, irreversible damage to the ears, which can occur in as little as a5 minutes at speeds of 65-75 mph.

Motorcycle Training:

In most states and countries, motorcycle safety courses are available to novice and experienced riders. Many community college and education centers will offer seminars and weekend courses of safety, laws, and riding basics. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers courses all over the United States for a low price. Courses are available for those inexperienced and veteran riders.
