Traumatic brain injuries, or closed head injuries, are devastating consequences of many automobile accidents, including rollover accidents, speeding accidents, and other crashes involving motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Brain injuries often occur on the cellular level, making them hard to detect initially. At Estey & Bomberger, LLP, Los Angeles brain injury attorneys have recovered millions of dollars for their seriously injured clients. Let their more than 40 years of experience work for you.
The human brain can sustain permanent damage when subjected to violent forces, frequently requiring lengthy hospitalization and therapy, with some patients simply never returning to pre-injury condition and a normal lifestyle. Traumatic brain injuries can impair just about any aspect of social, mental, emotional, and physical functioning.
In addition to automobile and other transportation related accidents, traumatic brain injuries can also result from:
In an automobile accident, even if the skull does not fracture or directly strike an object such as a windshield or steering wheel, the force of the brain against the skull can be damaged from bruising (contusion) and bleeding (hemorrhaging). Traumatic brain injury can happen as a result of a whiplash injury, without a skull fracture or other head injury.
The human brain controls all human emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, love, fear, anger and hate. The brain contains all of your memories, makes you intelligent, and tells you when you body is hungry, thirsty or tired. The brain is a part of the central nervous system, and receives sensory signals from every other part of your body.
The cranium is the part of the human skull that protects the brain. A human brain weighs about 3 pounds and contains around 100 billion nerve cells. Separating the brain and the skull are three protective membranes: the dura mater, the arachnoid mater, and the pia mater. Cerebrospinal fluid fills the space within these membranes and the skull, allowing the brain to “float” inside the head. This is fluid is also critical in exchanging nutrients between brain cells and blood vessels.
Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI)
The most common type of traumatic brain injury is a diffuse axonal injury, which occurs in about half of all brain injury cases. This type of injury causes widespread damage to the axons, the long slender projections of the nerve cells. A diffuse axonal injury does not often kill a person, but can leave a victim in a coma or persistent vegetative state.
Coup and Contrecoup Injuries
Both coup and contrecoup brain injuries are associated with focal brain injuries, or injuries damaging specific areas of the brain. In a coup injury, the brain collides with the inside of a cranium at the point of impact where the head strikes an object. In a contrecoup injury, the brain hits the opposite side of the cranium where the head was impacted. Both coup and contrecoup injuries can occur with violent movement of the head in the absence of an impact, i.e. in the case of serious whiplash, and can also cause diffuse axonal injury.
