California U.S. Route 395 Accident Attorneys

If you have been injured or lost a member of your family in an accident on U.S. Route 395 in California, the attorneys at Estey & Bomberger may be able to help. Our attorneys have represented victims of 395 accidents, and our investigators know the dangerous spans of this heavily travelled highway. We are all too familiar with the dangers of this highway, as is the national news media. NBC’s “Dateline” has called U.S. route 395 one of the most deadly two-lane highways in the country. In San Bernardino County alone, 28 people died in accidents between 2003 and 2005 on Highway 395, according to San Bernardino Associated Governments.

About U.S. Route 395

U.S. Route 395 runs from Hesperia in San Bernardino County, CA to the U.S.- Canada Border in Laurier, Washington, where it continues as British Columbia Highway 395.  In the wintertime, Highway 395 is a popular driving route from southern California to ski resorts in Mammoth Mountain and Lake Tahoe, CA. The highway is split into two sections in California, because it crosses into Nevada for an 87-mile stretch near Lake Tahoe. Highway 395 is used to access the lowest point in North America, Death Valley, and the highest location in the contiguous United States, Mount Whitney. U.S. Highway 395, established in 1926, is maintained by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and patrolled by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Route 395 Trucking Accidents

Trucking companies frequently use Highway 395 to transport freight and cargo. Parts of 395 are considered very dangerous, particularly the 44-mile stretch from Hesperia to State Route 58. In areas where the road narrows to just two lanes without a center median, the risk for head-on collisions is heightened when motorists make unsafe passing attempts. Accidents involving semi-trucks and tractor-trailers can easily result in fatality or catastrophic, life-changing injury. Caltrans and SANBAG (San Bernardino Associated Governments, the county transportation planning agency) have conducted studies on implementing proposed safety improvements on various parts of the highway.

Causes of Hwy 395 Accidents

Highway 395 accidents may be caused by a number of factors, including negligent driving, speeding, drunk driving, weather conditions, poor road maintenance, and other causes. Negligent driving takes the lives of thousands of innocent drivers and passengers every year. If you have been hurt in a Highway 395 crash or lost a member of your family in a fatal accident on U.S. Route 395, you may be entitled to compensation from the party or parties responsible for your injuries.
