About Interstate 80 in California

In California, Interstate Eighty (I-80) runs east and west from the San Francisco bay area to north Lake Tahoe and into Reno, Nevada. After Interstate 90, the 80 is the second longest interstate highway in the country. Interstate 80 provides access to San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, Vallejo, Fairfield, Vacaville, Davis, Sacramento, and Truckee, through San Francisco County, Alameda County, Contra Costa County, Solano County, Napa County, Yolo County, Sacramento County, Placer County, Nevada County and Sierra County.

Starting in San Francisco, I-80 goes through California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania before ending in Teaneck, New Jersey. For its entire length, Interstate 80 is also called the Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway and the East-West Blue Star Memorial Highway. From the Sacramento/Placer County line to the Nevada state line, I-80 is called the Alan S. Hart Freeway. It is called the Lincoln Highway from Sacramento to Reno, and the Kent D. Pursel Memorial Freeway from the Bay Bridge to the Alameda/Contra Costa County Line.

The 199 miles of Interstate 80 in CA are maintained by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).  Caltrans has set up a website offering information about construction schedules, road closures and detour information. For more information, visit getacross80.com.

I-80 & Donner Summit

In Nevada County (state of CA), I-80 passes through the crest of the Sierra Nevada Mountains at Donner Summit. Weather in this area can be treacherous, although Donner Summit is generally open year-around, except for the worst snowstorms. The highest point of Donner Summit is also called the Euer Saddle.

Interstate 80 Accidents

Interstate 80 made national headlines in April 2009 when a bus went off Interstate 80 near the Nevada-California border, killing two people and injuring dozens of others. This accident, blamed on driver fatigue and a sudden lane change is just one of many I-80 accidents on a very busy interstate freeway. Dozens of people die each year and many more are seriously injured in Interstate 80 accidents. Accidents may be caused by driver, trucker or motorcyclist negligence, drunk driving, speeding, fatigue, weather conditions, poor road maintenance or defective design, and many other causes.
