California Interstate 580 Accident Attorneys

Interstate 580 (I-580) is an 80-mile spur route of Interstate 80, running from US Route 101 in San Rafael (Marin County) to I-5 near Tracy (San Joaquin County). The heavily traveled route connects the SF bay area to the Central Valley.  Between Emeryville and Albany in Alameda County, the freeway is designated both I-80 and I-580, with the routes moving in opposite directions. So for a period of several miles, a car travelling on I-80 East is also travelling on I-580 West.

Since I 580 was built in 1963 (then as part of U.S. Route 50), trucks weighing more than 4.5 tons are not allowed through the 14-mile stretch through Oakland, between Grand Avenue and San Leandro. The alternate route is Interstate 880. The trucking industry has long lobbied to remove this ban, but local opposition has prevented this. An I-580 truck restriction was added to the California Vehicle Code in 2000. When major accidents occur on either I-80 or I-238, the CHP will allow trucks on Interstate 580 temporarily.
